Wist jij dat er in de jaren ‘70 en ‘80 al Surinaamse emancipatiebewegingen actief waren die zich inzetten voor de strijd tegen racisme en ongelijkheid? Deze verhalen en geschiedenissen zijn te vinden in The Black Archives: boekencollecties, archieven en artefacten die de nalatenschap zijn van zwarte schrijvers en wetenschappers. The Black Archives wil de geschiedenis van zwarte emancipatiebewegingen en personen in Nederland documenteren, conserveren en zichtbaar en toegankelijk maken voor een breed publiek.
Over the Black Archives De archieven bevinden zich in het pand van de Vereniging Ons Suriname in Amsterdam Oost. Het groeiend archief bestaat momenteel uit meer dan 4.000 bijzondere historische boeken, documenten, foto’s, films en artefacten rond de Surinaamse en zwarte geschiedenis in Nederland. In aanloop naar het 100-jarig bestaan van de Vereniging (in 2019) willen wij voor het eerst deze geschiedenis voor een breed publiek toegankelijk maken.

De tentoonstelling Centrale onderwerpen uit de archieven als racisme, slavernij, wetenschap over voormalige koloniën en zwarte emancipatie, zijn actueel en tevens onderbelicht. Terwijl iedereen kennis zou moeten hebben van dit onderdeel van de Surinaamse, Caribische, Afrikaanse én Nederlandse geschiedenis die zich afspeelde in Amsterdam. Samen met het Amsterdam Museum willen wij daarom een tentoonstelling maken, die opent op 25 november 2017 in het verenigingspand, met een publieksprogramma rond deze onderwerpen.
Hoe steun ik The Black Archives? De archieven moeten verder worden ontsloten om deze belangrijke verhalen uit de historische bronnen naar boven te halen. Sinds New Urban Collective begin 2016 naar pand van Ons Suriname is verhuisd, wordt daar hard aan gewerkt. Maar we hebben nog een duwtje in de rug nodig om met een professioneel team aan de slag te gaan met de indexering en digitalisering van The Black Archives, zodat we in november de resultaten kunnen presenteren in de tentoonstelling. De campagne gaat door na een vliegende start! De campagne

Het werd op 1 juli met een enerverende dialoog tussen de initiatiefnemers en inspirerende optredens van spoken word artiesten Dorothy Blokland en Insayno tijdens het Keti Koti festival in het Oosterpark gelanceerd. Slechts drie dagen waren nodig om het bedrag van €10.000,- bijeen te brengen en binnen vier dagen hadden al meer dan 500 mensen gedoneerd.
Met het reeds opgehaalde bedrag van €10.000,- kan The Black Archives hier bovenop de huidige collecties van Otto en Hermie Huiswoud, Glenn Willemsen en Vereniging Ons Suriname archiveren en (deels) digitaliseren. Het volgende target is om in totaal €20.000,- aan donaties te ontvangen van tenminste 500 donateurs. Met additionele donaties kan de organisatie de donatie van Frits Corsten, Philomena Essed en toekomstige donaties archiveren, inventariseren en een plek geven in the Black Archives. Did you know that in the 70s and 80s all Surinamese emancipation movements were actively working to combat racism and inequality? These stories and histories can be found in The Black Archives: an unique collection of books, archives and artifacts, which are the legacy of black writers and scientists. The Black Archives are located in the premises of the Association Our Suriname in Amsterdam East. The growing archive currently consists of more than 4,000 special historical books, documents, photographs, films and artifacts around the Surinamese and black history in the Netherlands. In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the Society (in 2019) we, for the first time, want to make this history accessible to a wide audience.

http://www.theblackarchives.nl/why-do-we-need-donations.html The exhibition Stories have the power to connect, inspire and break through stereotypical images and narratives. In addition, stories provide the opportunity to reveal hidden stories and provide new insights in the present and future. In the Netherlands much of the history of slavery and colonialism and its legacy, the history and culture of people from the Surinamese, Caribbean and African diaspora has been marginalized in the educational and cultural institutions. Together with the Amsterdam Museum we want to create an exhibition which we are planning to open on November 25, 2017 at the premises of our association, complete with a public program concerning the aforementioned topics.
The archives should be further opened to bring out these important stories from historical sources. It has been the core objective of New Urban Collective since we moved to the former premises of vereniging Ons Suriname (the association of Surinamese people) in early 2016. But we still need support to develop a professional team to get started with the digitalization and indexing of The Black Archives, so we will be able to present the results in November at the exhibition.
